  • Japan's PC Sales in 3rd Week of Sept. Up 50 Pct. from Previous Year
  • October 19, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Personal computer sales are strong in Japan at large volume appliance stores, with PC sales in the third week of September (Sept. 21-Sept. 27) registering an increase for the third straight week on a year-on-year basis, in terms of both number of units sold and value.
According to the data collected by GfK Japan Ltd., an information service company that handles point of sales data from large volume appliance retailers, PC sales at about 2,000 shops in the third week of September increased 2.6 percent in terms of units and 3.0 percent in value, from the previous week (See table).

As compared with the same week in 1997 (Sept. 22 - 28, 1997), the sales increased 52.6 percent in units and 50.8 percent in value.

The average sales price increased to 226,102 yen (US$1,900), up 928 yen from the previous week.

Over a five-week period, the average PC sales price was stable. Notebook PCs are not showing drastic price declines. Therefore, the overall average selling prices both of desktops and notebooks are leveling off to 1997 levels.

In terms of unit and value terms, PCs sold in the surveyed months this year exceed the results for 1997. Nikkei Market Access assumes that consumers expect that PCs will have stable pricing but will come with higher performance levels.

Sony Corp.'s PCG-C1 with a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera appeared in stores during the week. Notebook PCs must now have features other than a light and slim appearance. The PC industry will need to devise ideas for boosting the PC market for individual users.

GfK Japan's data comes from about 2,000 outlets of 41 companies. GfK Japan selected the 41 in 1996 and has been releasing their data since then.

GfK Japan covers a greater number of outlets with combined unit-base sales accounting for about 10 percent of total domestic PC shipments and about 25 percent of total retail sales.
