  • Pudong Software Park Under Construction in Shanghai
  • October 21, 1998 (SHANGHAI, China) -- Construction of a large-scale computer software park began in Shanghai, China's major industrial and commercial center.
The Pudong Software Park, co-funded by the Ministry of the Information Industry and the Shanghai Municipality, is being designed as a national software production center similar to California's Silicon Valley.

The park, with an area of 150,000 sq. meters in the Pudong New Area, will be open to software enterprises and engineers from China and overseas.

A total service system comprising a software production center, software evaluation services and training centers will be built at the park.

The first phase, involving an investment of RMB150 million (US$17.9 million), is slated for completion in September 1999. Initially, about 30 information enterprises are expected to occupy the new park.

Experts said that the development of the park is in line with China's efforts to bring more information technology into all sectors of its economy.
