Information, Home Products Firms Compete in Taiwan DVD Market
|
October 30, 1998 (TAIPEI) -- Manufacturers of home appliances and information
products are competing for a share of Taiwan's digital video disc (DVD)
market.
|
Prospects for related products appear promising over the next few years.
Home appliance makers view access to DVD players as a natural development,
as they already possess production technology.
However, market observers estimate that within the next two to three
years, market demand for DVD players and drives will stand at a ratio
of three to seven.
Thus, these companies are also making determined moves to develop DVD
drives.
Information companies are equally aggressive.
Acer Inc. entered technical cooperation with Japan's Hitachi Ltd. in
June.
Royal Information Electronics Co., Ltd. started to ramp up production
of DVD players in September, offering a bargain of NT$1,500 (US$46).
However, the company has been relying on the Japanese -- mainly Matsushita
Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. -- for its supply of key components such
as pick-up heads and core motors.
More recently, Mustek Systems Inc., a leading local scanner maker, developed
a prototype of a DVD player with key components from Japan's Sanyo Electric
Co., Ltd. The company expects to ramp up production at year end.
