  • Liaoning, China Records 16,595 Internet Subscribers
  • September 4, 1998 (SHENYANG, China) -- Liaoning Province of northeastern China reported it has 16,595 Internet subscribers, including 95 corporate users renting special fiber-optic cables for easier access to the Internet.
China was first connected to the Internet in April 1994. It now has 1.06 million Internet subscribers, according to the China Internet Information Center.

Sources from the Liaoning Provincial Digital Telecommunications Bureau said that 9,500 subscribers have been added in the first seven months of this year.

Feng Qiang, an official with the province's Digital Telecommunications Bureau, noted his province will use Internet services for long-distance education, medical care and inquiries about scores on national university and college entrance examinations in the future.

The province's port city of Dalian recently organized a summer camp where students received free training about the World Wide Web.

Many newspapers also have set up special pages to popularize knowledge about the Internet and related fields.
