China Develops Digital High Definition TV System
|
September 11, 1998 (BEIJING) -- China recently developed a prototype
digital high definition television (HDTV) system and has emerged as
the fourth country to master the technology of HDTV terrestrial broadcasting
systems.
|
Song Jian, head of the state high-tech engineering program, said the
digital HDTV system has begun a five-day terrestrial broadcasting and
reception demonstration via Beijing's Central Television Tower.
Song, who is also the president of the Chinese Academy of Engineering,
added that China will begin trial broadcasting of HDTV programs in around
two years, and will establish a number of HDTV ventures.
The HDTV research program, which required RMB15 million (US$1.8 million)
in investment funds, was completed by more than 200 scientists from
nine universities and research institutions over a period of two years.
The research units include Shanghai Jiaotong University, Tianjin University
and the Academy of Electronics Science.
