Samsung Electronics Mass Produces 15-In. LCD Panel
|
September 14, 1998 (SEOUL) -- Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. began commercial
production of a 15-in. thin-film transistor liquid-crystal display (TFT-LCD)
panel to be used in notebook personal computers.
|
The panel weighs 760 grams and has a brightness of 150 candella.
Samsung Electronics will supply its products to U.S. computer vendors.
Initial output of 6,000 units a month is planned. That will grow to
20,000 units by year's end, the company said.
While most current notebook PCs use a 12.1-in. or 13.3-in. panel, IBM
Corp. and Compaq Computer Corp. are planning to produce a 15-in. notebook
from October.
According to Display Search, a U.S.-based LCD market researcher, the
market share of 12.1-in. panels dropped to 40 percent in 1998, while
that for 13.3-in. and 14.1-in. rose to 41 percent and 18 percent, respectively.
The 15-in. panel is estimated to represent about 6 percent of the market
in 1999.
