Samsung Establishes Picture-Tube Joint Venture in Tianjin
|
September 18, 1998 (TIANJIN, China) -- Tianjin-Samsung Display Device
Co., Ltd., a new joint venture between Tianjin Electronic Meters Corp.
and Samsung Display Devices Co., Ltd., recently started up production.
|
The joint venture is located in the Wuqing Development Zone in suburban
Tianjin, and has an area of 220,000 square meters.
It is capable of producing large-screen and high-definition color picture
tubes. By the end of 1998, it is expected to produce 300,000 units.
Some US$383 million was spent for the first-phase construction of the
joint venture, most of which was used to finance the building of two
production lines -- one for TV-set color picture tubes and the other
for computers.
The computer color picture-tube production line, with an annual production
capacity of 1.8 million units, has just finished equipment installation
and will begin production early next year.
When both production lines become operational next year, the company
will be able to generate RMB4 billion (US$481 million) in output value,
according to a company executive.
Tianjin is a major Chinese city for Korean investment. So far, more than
700 projects with investments exceeding US$1 billion have been started
by Korean investors.
The Samsung Group, for example, has six joint ventures or solely invested
businesses in Tianjin.
