  • Matsushita to Release DVD Car Navigation System
  • September 25, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Matsushita Communication Industrial Co., Ltd. announced a new car navigation device with a DVD video player.
The CN-DV2500D can play DVD videos, video CDs and music CDs. The company said the company works well by playing video in the back seat of a recreational vehicle and playing video and music outside.

Matsushita Communication claims this is the first product of its kind with a DVD-ROM player with an MPEG2 decoder to be used in a car.

Also for the first time, it provides a voice control function for Matsushita's car navigation device. When a user specifies a destination using an attached microphone, a map around the destination is displayed. Selection from the menu also can be done by voice input.

    the displayed map is three-dimensional.

The CN-DV2500D car navigation device is priced at 260,000 yen (US$1,900). The CN-DV2500VD combined with a 7-in. liquid-crystal display and a TV tuner is 355,000 yen (US$2,600).

The company is targeting monthly production of 5,000 units of the former and 10,000 of the latter. Both are to be released on Nov. 1.
