Desktop LCD PC Mart to Quadruple in Japan
|
September 28, 1998 (TOKYO) -- The Japanese market for space-saving desktop/tower
PCs with liquid-crystal displays will be 200,000 units in the first
half of 1998, and is expected to total 600,000 in 1998, according to
a Nikkei Market Access survey.
|
The projected market size this year will be quadruple
the 1997 market size, estimated at about 150,000 units.
Due to improved productivity in 1997 by manufacturers of LCD panels,
prices of LCD panels were dramatically reduced to almost fill the price
gap between desktop/tower PCs with an LCD panel and ordinary desktop/tower
PCs.
Strong demand for space-saving PCs is helping market growth gain momentum
for both corporate and individual users. Japanese offices and houses
are small and can afford little space for placing PCs.
The scale of the market for space-saving desktop/tower PCs in 1999 will
be 1.2 million units (approximately 15 percent of the entire domestic
PC market) and 2.4 million (approximately 30 percent of the entire domestic
PC market) in the year 2000.
With regard to breakdown of the number of shipments in Japan in the first
half of 1998, Hitachi Ltd. with its various lineups of space-saving
PCs with LCDs ranked first, holding 32.8 percent of the market, followed
by NEC Corp. with 32.0 percent. NEC has increased shipments rapidly
since June 1998. NEC's products are in short supply, indicating the
company may grab the largest share in the market for the whole year
of 1998.
Space-saving PCs in the survey include all-in-one PCs with LCD monitors
attached to them, as well as desktop/tower PCs that come with an LCD
monitor. The LCD monitor itself is not included. Even if a PC itself
is compact, it is not included if combined with a CRT monitor.
