  • Korea's Cellular Phone Service Cancellations Rising Sharply
  • July 6, 1998 (SEOUL) -- A total of 780,000 cellular phone users canceled services in the January-May period, compared with 750,000 cancellations for all of last year, the Ministry of Information and Communications announced.
The cancellations were attributed mainly to excessive competition among mobile phone companies.

In June, Korea's five mobile phone companies had a total of 10 million subscribers.

SK Telecom and Shinsegi Telecom, Korea's two cellular phone companies, registered a total of 650,000 cancellations, and the PCS service providers, Korea Telecom Freetel, Hansol Telecom and LG Telecom, recorded a total of 130,000 cancellations in the five months.

Companies offering deposit subsidies have reported more cancellations.
