LCD Panel Prices Likely to Rise in Fourth Quarter
|
August 27, 1998 (TAIPEI) -- Local manufacturers are clearing their notebook
PC inventories and seeing a rise in OEM orders, which is contributing
to an increase in demand for liquid-crystal display (LCD) panels.
|
Producers of LCD panels said that the yields of their manufacturing lines
have reached about 90 percent and that they are contemplating raising
prices in the fourth quarter.
According to statistics released by the Market Intelligence Center of
the Institute for Information Industry, the majority of local notebook
PC makers had nearly cleared their excess inventories by the end of
July.
Total OEM-type shipments are expected to reach 3.45 million units in
the second half of the year, which would account for 58 percent of the
annual output of local notebook PC manufacturers.
A South Korean LCD maker even revealed that its output will soon be fully
covered by orders.
The price of 12.1-in. LCD panels is now quoted at US$230 a unit. Local
manufacturers said that the scale of upward price adjustments will be
determined by market demand in the fourth quarter.
