| U.S., Europe Top Investors in Beijing

September 21, 1998 (BEIJING) -- Beijing saw a three-fold increase in
U.S. investments in the first eight months of the year, with European
investments rising 1.6-fold.

Beijing recorded US$1.54 billion in foreign investment, representing
a 62.27 percent boost for total foreign investments for the period,
according to statistics from the Beijing Foreign Economic Relations
and Trade Commission.
Asian countries accounted for the slowest growth rate in investments,
with the rate for the period growing by 20 percent.
Beijing approved 457 foreign-funded enterprises, up 9.1 percent over
the 1997 period.
