3Com Reports US$614.6M Sales in Asian Networking Market

September 22, 1998 (HONG KONG) -- 3Com Corp. of the United States achieved
a 26.8 percent overall Asian networking market share, or US$614.6 million
in sales in 1997, according to a report released by International Data
Corp. (IDC) Asia Pacific.

The networking market includes four product categories: hubs, switches,
routers and network interface cards (NICs). In 1996, 3Com's revenues
in the region reached US$370.3 million for a 20.8 percent share.
Sandra Ng, manager of networking products research for IDC Asia Pacific,
said that 3Com is the only major vendor that is active in all four main
networking product areas.
Its performance in the NIC sector outstripped the competition with a
44 percent overall revenue market share .
In 1997, the total market in Asia Pacific for hubs, switches, routers
and NICs was valued by IDC at US$2.3 billion. Of the 12 countries in
the region, China, Australia and Korea are the first-, second- and third-largest
markets, respectively.
3Com's portfolio of end-to-end networking solutions development in Asia
includes projects such as the Data Communications Network, a nationwide
backbone linking the headquarters of China's Ministry of Information
Industry with 32 provincial centers around the country; a Wide Area
Network (WAN) for Australia's Federal Department of Health and Family
Services, providing switched Fast Ethernet service to 5,000 desktops
spanning across Australia via one of Asia's largest asynchronous transfer
mode (ATM) backbones; and a 6,000-node ATM network for the National
University of Singapore.
