China Pumps Funds into Telecom Infrastructure
|
September 23, 1998 (BEIJING) -- China's Ministry of Finance recently
announced the issuance of RMB100 billion (US$12 billion) to fund infrastructure
construction.
|
Much of the funds will go to construction and expansion of trunk line
optical cable, mobile communications and local telephone networks.
Huge investment and domestic demand have become the driving force for
growth for the telecom market in China.
China Telecom, the country's major telecom operator, set a goal to raise
the number of cellular phone users from 7 million this year to 20 million.
The company accounts for 98 percent of the country's cellular market.
Foreign players also benefit from China's sound telecom performance.
Zhang Ken, director of Ericsson (China)'s wireless technology department,
said that China was Ericsson's second-largest market after the United
States in 1997.
