MIT, NTT to Jointly Research Telecommunications Technology
|
September 25, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (NTT)
and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) said they will collaborate
on basic research, including telecommunications technology, for use
in five to 10 years.
|
This research project will be jointly conducted by research institutes
of NTT and two MIT bodies, the Laboratory for Computer Science and the
Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.
NTT and MIT have established a steering committee to be attended by three
research supervisors from each party and decided on seven research themes
to be worked on jointly.
The term of the joint research is five years, and NTT is due to fully
bear the cost of the research. The limit of funding by NTT throughout
five years is about US$18 million. The results of the joint research
will belong to NTT as its intellectual property.
Every year the steering committee will evaluate progress in the set themes
of joint research, although basic research usually needs comparatively
longer time to produce fruit. They may review research themes or add
new ones depending on the evaluation.
NTT intends to open overseas positions to skilled persons and increase
its return on investment in basic R&D.; MIT also benefits from the arrangement
because of the large research funds and human resources to be dispatched
by NTT for research.
The seven research themes initially chosen are as follows:
(1) A self-configuring type of communications protocol for mobile gear
using wireless networks
(2) a computer vision system for allowing an audience to enjoy broadcast
movies or motion pictures (such as live sports) from angles or view
points of their own choice
(3) Voice interactive systems with a multi-language function
(4) Security functions on networks
(5) Multimedia systems mixing motion pictures and voice
(6) Operating and managing functions of distributed systems
(7) Three-dimensional graphics systems with ultra-high resolution.
If the progress is encouraging at a steering committee in a year, the
committee will introduce a few more themes for further joint research.
