Samsung Electronics Develops Sample 1G SDRAM Chip
|
September 25, 1998 (SEOUL) -- Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. developed
engineering samples of 1-gigabit synchronous dynamic random access memory
(SDRAM) microchips, the company said Sept. 23.
|
Prototypes of the memory microchips, made with a 0.18-micron circuit
design rule, have been sent to international computer vendors, including
IBM Corp., Compaq Computer Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co., for performance
tests. Samsung said it is the world's first company to develop such
engineering samples.
The chip measures just 570 sq. mm., and is capable of storing 8,000 pages
of newspaper information, according to Samsung Electronics.
The company said its SDRAM development technology has surpassed the development
efforts of its rivals in Japan.
Samsung Electronics said it will release a commercial product sample
in 2001 and that mass production will begin in 2002.
