Acer Display's TFT-LCD Line to Process Large Substrates
|
October 27, 1998 (HSINCHU, Taiwan) -- Acer Display Technology Inc. told
Nikkei Microdevices that the construction of its line in Hsinchu for
large, thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT- LCD) panels
is progressing as scheduled.

The TFT-LCDs will have a large glass substrate size of 600mm x 720mm,
Acer Display said.
According to Acer Display, 85 percent of its Hsinchu plant has been completed.
All the construction work including the clean room is expected to be
finished in December.
Equipment will be installed in the first quarter of 1999, trial operations
will begin in the second quarter and mass production of the panels in
the third quarter, the company said.
Acer Display is introducing IBM Japan Ltd.'s manufacturing technology
for the panels, but it plans to adopt a different line configuration
from that of the Display Technology Inc. Yasu plant in Japan, using
a glass substrate size of 550mm x 650mm as the sizes become larger.
Display Technology is a joint venture for making TFT-LCDs set up by IBM
Japan and Toshiba Corp.
Acer Display plans to introduce IBM Japan's process control system called
Poseidon at its Hsinchu plant.
"As for the yield of Acer Display's new line, we aim to quickly reach
a level surpassing the average yield of Japanese LCD makers at the six-month
mark, although it usually takes about a full year for Taiwan-based companies
to do so," said H.B. Chen, president of Acer Display.
Acer Display plans to process a base of 15,000 sheets of glass substrates
a month in the initial stage of operating the line, and 30,000 sheets
a month in 2000.
