  • Unipac, Matsushita Agree on Technical Cooperation
  • November 4, 1998 (TAIPEI) -- Unipac Optoelectronics Corp., a local maker of thin film transistor-liquid crystal displays (TFT-LCDs), signed a technical cooperation agreement with Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. for the production of large TFT-LCDs.
Unipac had earlier proposed the construction of a production facility in Taiwan to be operated jointly with Matsushita. The agreement is to take the form of technical cooperation, rather than technology transfer, a Unipac source said.

The source noted that the cooperation will help expand Unipac's market access and sales.

Unipac, a unit of the United Microelectronics Group, expects the cooperation to help it generate a profit after eight years of losses. Unipac is expanding its number two fab, which is located in the Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park, and is scheduled to launch production in July 1999.

The expansion, financed through a rights issue valued at NT$8.06 billion (US$248.2 million), is expected to turn out 1.6 million units of TFT-LCDs a year, with annual production to reach NT$14.5 billion.

Six other local companies have announced plans to make inroads into TFT-LCD production. Among them, Chung Hwa Picture Tubes Co., Ltd. is cooperating with Mitsubishi Corp.; Acer Display Technology Inc. is collaborating with IBM Corp.; and Hann Star Display Corp. with Toshiba Corp.
