Korea's Dacom, China to Develop Mobile Phone System
|
December 10, 1998 (SEOUL) -- Dacom Corp. will team up with mobile phone
interests in China to develop a CDMA-based wireless local loop (WLL)
system and the next-generation satellite mobile phone system called
IMT-2000.
|
In line with an agreement signed Dec. 8, the partners will make frequency-support
microchips for the mobile phones, while Dacom will develop a silicon
microchip for a CDMA modem, for data transmission at 384kbps.
"With the bilateral technical ties, Dacom has gained better access to
the Chinese mobile phone market, which has great growth potential,"
said Kwak Chi-young, president of Dacom.
He predicted that the number of Chinese mobile phone subscribers will
double to 40 million by the end of 2000.
Chinese demand for the WLL system, which sends wireless data and voice
signals from base stations to individual homes, is estimated to reach
4.8 million lines based on 144kbps in 2001, and 8 million lines based
on 384kbps in 2005.
