Beijing's Computer Software Imports Expand at Fast Pace
|
January 12, 1999 (BEIJING) -- Beijing's imports of computer software
totaled US$59.33 million from January to November 1998, or 2.4 times
the imports in the same period in 1997, customs officials said.
|
State-owned and foreign-funded enterprises are Beijing's biggest software
importers, with 98 percent of all imported software products purchased
by such enterprises.
In the initial 11 months of 1998, the city's software imports accounted
for 67.4 percent of the country's total. Most of the imported software
is from Finland and Sweden.
Statistics from China's customs offices indicate that Beijing's software
imports have accounted for more than half of the country's total since
1993.
The rapid increase in the city's software imports reflects the general
trend in China, entailing the introduction of more advanced foreign
technology and equipment, a recent report said. Most imported software
is used for national defense, scientific research, and the information
and pharmaceutical industries.
And more software is being imported for telecommunications facilities,
the report added.
