  • China's Mobile Phone Users Rise 71 Pct. in Jan.-Nov. '98
  • January 20, 1998 (BEIJING) -- China had 22.63 million mobile phone users by the end of November 1998, according to the Ministry of Information Industry.
This represents a high 71 percent increase from the beginning of the year.

In the first six months of 1998, an average of 910,000 new mobile phone users signed up every month, compared to an average of 480,000 in 1997.

China has given priority to the development of mobile communications since it was introduced into the country about a decade ago. Since then, the number of mobile phone users has been growing at an annual rate of 150 percent.

It took about 10 years for China to have its first 10 million mobile phone users, but the second 10 million were added in just 17 months.
