  • Beijing Police Arrest Computer-Virus Hacker Suspect
  • January 21, 1999 (BEIJING) -- A hacker who is suspected of putting a computer virus called a "logical bomb" in two sets of educational software has been arrested, according to the Beijing police.
He is a former director of the Beijing Wuyou Software Development Co., the developer of the two educational software programs for A-degree national computer grade examinations, police said.

The virus, which is automatically disguised in the form of an "exe" document, was designed to erase data on computer hard drives if the software is operated on every 27th day after March 27, 1999.

Beijing Wuyou Software Development Co. said that it suffered losses of more than RMB500,000 (US$59,524) because the company had to recall all of the 16,000 software products it had sold.
