LG Electronics Opens 17-in. Flat Monitor Plant
|
February 1, 1999 (SEOUL) -- In an effort to become a top global manufacturer
of flat braun tube monitors, LG Electronics Co., Ltd. opened a new factory
for its 17-in. Flatron monitor.
|
LG Electronics introduced the model in May 1998, and plans to produce
1 million units a year at the new plant.
At present, LG and Mitsubishi Electric Corp. are the only two companies
that are equipped to commercially produce flat braun tubes for monitors,
staying ahead of other rivals such as Sony Corp. and Samsung Display
Devices, said an LG official.
LG said it will convert its existing braun tube production lines to manufacture
the 17-in. flat monitors as well as its 19-in. and 21-in. models during
the second half of this year.
The output ratio for Flatron will take 50 percent of total monitor production
by the year 2002, the official said.
The world flat monitor market, which recorded a mere 50,000 flat monitors
last year, is expected to see a sharp rise to 2 million units this year
and top 32 million in 2005.
