China Unicom Earmarks US$361M to Expand Guangdong GSM Net

February 2, 1999 (GUANGZHOU, China) -- China Unicom said it will invest
RMB3 billion (US$361 million) to expand the third phase of its GSM network
in southern Guangdong Province.

China Unicom is the country's second-largest telecommunications company.
The main equipment for expanding the global system for mobile network
project will be supplied by Motorola Inc. of the United States and Siemens
AG of Germany. The Chinese company and Motorola signed a recent agreement.
The third phase of expansion includes building and renovating 16 switching
centers and 676 new base stations. The second phase of expansion was
completed in 1998.
The capacity of China Unicom's GSM network in Guangdong will increase
from 760,000 lines to 1.16 million lines by the end of this year, according
to a company official.
Currently, China Unicom's GSM network has a total of over 1.5 million
mobile phone subscribers, including 350,000 in Guangdong.
