Shandong Focuses on Boosting Telecom Infrastructure

February 12, 1999 (JINAN, China) -- Shandong province spent a record
RMB9.4 billion (US$1.13 billion) on telecom infrastructure projects
in 1998, according to official statistics.

Shandong, which is located in eastern China, added 12,400km of optical-fiber
cables last year, bringing the total length to 43,400km.
Work on a new telecom network began in 86 counties last year. And the
province's urban and rural telephone switchboard capacity increased
by 1.8 million lines and the number of telephone customers grew by 1.79
million.
The number of Shandong's mobile phone users increased by 650,000 during
the year. Shandong experienced the second largest growth rate for mobile
phone users among China's provinces.
