  • Matsushita Introduces Set-Top Box for New WebTV Service
  • November 17, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. announced the TU-WE100 set-top box for WebTV Plus, a new service slated to start on Dec. 1 by WebTV Networks KK.
The new device is scheduled to come onto the market at the price of 55,000 yen (US$450).

WebTV Plus is an extended version of current services that comes with contents for TV programs. The current services enable viewers to browse Web pages as well as send and receive e-mail via television. The additional contents are to include program information provided in synchronization with TV broadcasts and to enable users to chat with personalities on TV.

The TU-WE100 also is equipped with a TV tuner. It enables simultaneous displaying and browsing of TV broadcast and contents of WebTV Plus. The predecessor of this set-top box does not let users browse through television and the Internet at the same time. TU-WE100 needs to be connected to a telephone line and a TV antenna, and its video output terminal should be connected to a video input terminal of a television.

The TU-WE100 is operated the same way as the current WebTV terminal: users operate the terminal by an attached remote controller when watching TV. Based on signals of the remote controller, the terminal reaches a Web page and displays it on television.

TU-WE100 is also available for browsing current WebTV and other Web pages, and sending and receiving e-mail. To enjoy WebTV and WebTV Plus, users need to contract with WebTV Networks.

These services cost 2,000 yen (US$16.40) for use for up to 15 hours monthly.
