  • Sony to Sell Digital Camera with 1.5M Pixels, 5x Zoom Lens
  • September 11, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Sony Corp. announced the release of the Cybershot Pro DSC-D700 (photo), a digital single-lens reflex camera with a 1.5 million-pixel charge-coupled device (CCD), designed for personal use.
The camera features a high image quality, Sony said.

The CCD is 1/2 in. in size, has 1.5 million pixels, and operates under a progressive scanning method. The pixel type is square-shaped with a color filter. Users can select desired picture sizes from 640 x 480 dots or 1,344 x 1,024 dots. The camera is equipped with a built-in strobe.

A 2.5-in. low-temperature polycrystalline silicon thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) can be used as a viewfinder. The camera has an optical 5x zoom lens with a lens focal length equivalent to 28mm to 140mm (for a 35mm film camera). A lens interchange device is not available.

The NP-F550 optional battery (priced at 7,500 yen or about US$55), which powers Sony's video cameras, enables users to take pictures for more than 2.5 hours, or about 1,700 pictures (with the flash and LCD turned off), the company said.

The camera uses a small memory card called Memory Stick, which was developed by Sony for recording media. It is mounted on a dedicated adapter and inserted into a Type II PC card slot. Commercial off-the-shelf PC cards also can be used as the recording media.

An 8MB memory stick attached to the camera is capable of recording 40 pictures in a high compression mode and 10 pictures in high image-quality mode. For the image recording method, a compression method is used that conforms to the JPEG format or non-compressed tagged image file format (TIFF) format.

The camera is equipped with a video output terminal to display pictures on a TV as well as the "Hot Shoe," a terminal for building a commercial off-the-shelf strobe.

Sony said the camera measures 130mm wide by 150mm deep by 100mm high and that it weighs about 820g.

The camera will list for a retail price of 235,000 yen (US$1,780) and sales are expected to start on Oct. 25. Sony will produce 1,000 units a month.
